Devenney's Walkoff Blast Sends Braves Past Dodgers
June 24, 2017
HERNDON, VA – Looking to keep from pushing their losing streak to four, the Herndon Braves aimed to defeat the Baltimore Dodgers as they had previously this season, and they did just that, earning the extra-inning victory by a score of 5-4.
Both teams managed to tack on a run in the first, as Herndon was able to cross home after a throw down to second from Baltimore’s catcher on an attempted steal.
Despite tying it up at 1-1, the Braves proceeded to surrender a run in the next three innings, and after four innings the score would reflect 4-1 in favor of Baltimore.
Tim Johnson’s at-bat in the fifth couldn’t have come at a more important time, as the Saint Joseph’s Hawk blasted a three-run homer well beyond the left field fence to knot things up at 4-4.
Neither offense could find any momentum following the longball, as play continued into the bottom of the ninth where the Braves would need just one run to send the crowd home happy.
Stepping up to the plate as a pinch hitter, Ciaran Devenney launched a home run down the left field line to give the Braves the victory.
On the mound for the Braves, Michael Geary went seven innings in his start, giving up four runs on ten hits and striking out three.
With the win, the Braves improve to 9-9 on the season.
The team’s next game will be back at Herndon High School tomorrow, June 25 where they will take on the Gaithersburg Giants at 7:00 p.m.
