Braves Score Twice in Tenth for 10-8 Win Over Riverdogs

June 29, 2017

LOUDOUN, VA – It took a few innings for the offense to get going, but the Herndon Braves managed to keep pace with the Loudoun Riverdogs and finally pull away to earn an extra-inning win on Thursday night by a score of 10-8.

Loudoun put up a pair in the early going to make it 2-0 after two complete innings, and added another tally in the third to make it 3-0.

The Braves’ bats finally heated up in the fourth, where they put up a pair of their own to cut the Riverdog lead to two.

Ciaran Devenney lined a double to the outfield, scoring Richard Constantine. Nick Wheeler then traded places with Devenney, scoring him on a RBI double.

The effort would only stand for a short time, as Loudoun plated two runs again in the sixth to make it 5-2.

The seventh inning was a productive one for the Braves, however, as it would keep things interesting heading into the final stretch of the game.

Brett Norwood continued his hot hitting with a RBI single, scoring Dakota Graham. Devenney then earned himself a bases-loaded walk which allowed Chandler Miller to cross the plate. Rounding out the trio of runs in the seventh was Nick Wheeler, whose single brought in Cayden Stover to tie up the game at 5-5.

The tie lasted until the eighth, where the Braves would claim the lead for the first time on the night thanks to a Chandler Miller RBI single. Additionally, Cayden Stover’s RBI double and Richard Constantine’s RBI single added to the Riverdog’s woes.

Loudoun scrapped for one run in the eighth, and managed to tie it up at 8-8 in the ninth with two runs.

Despite the late heroics from the hometown team, the Braves recovered by scoring two in the tenth and closing things out in the bottom half for the victory.

On the mound for the Braves, Mitch Holloway was the highlight, throwing 2.1 innings all while surrendering four hits and just one run.

With the win, the Braves improve to 11-12 on the season.

The club’s next game will be tomorrow at Oakton High School where they will take on the Rockville Express at 7:00 p.m.
